Geselle trifft Gazelle awarded Hermann Schmidt Prize
Jury of the renowned prize for vocational education social skills and sustainable concept

Berlin/Mainz. Geselle trifft Gazelle e.V. also receives recognition in politics and business. The project received the renowned Hermann Schmidt Prize in Berlin. The jury honored the great voluntary achievement and the special promotion of social skills through working in a completely new cultural circle. The sustainability and quality assurance of the project also convinced the jury. “Empathy and motivation as well as social, intercultural and professional skills of the participants are sustainably promoted,” emphasizes the jury.
The Hermann Schmidt Prize is awarded annually by the Association for Innovative Vocational Education e.V. The prize is supported by the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training Bonn and the W. Bertelsmann Publishing House and is endowed with 3000 euros. Since 1997, it has recognized outstanding achievements in selected areas of vocational education. This year’s motto was “Innovative company models for promoting social skills in training and continuing education.” The namesake is Prof. Dr. Hermann Schmidt, who was president of the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training from 1977 to 1997. Geselle trifft Gazelle is a social and educational project that sends young painter journeymen and journeywomen as well as apprentices in their third year of training on a trip to Rwanda. In the Rhineland-Palatinate partner country, they work together with students from local vocational schools on social projects and thus improve social skills, teamwork but also professional skills. In addition to the Hermann Schmidt Prize this year and the Dr. Murjahn Promotion Prize last year, Geselle trifft Gazelle is also pleased about the support and recognition from Mainzer Volksbank. As part of World Savings Day, the bank supports social projects and social commitment – including Geselle trifft Gazelle with a donation of €1500.
With these successes behind them, the association is already planning the trip for 2016. Unlike in previous years, the response is huge. “We already have over 10 applications,” reports
initiator Norbert de Wolf, “that’s a record.”

The jury’s reasoning for the Hermann Schmidt Prize in full text:
The jury honors this elaborate project because it particularly promotes the social skills, teamwork ability and personality development of the participants through living and working in a completely different cultural circle with fundamentally different political, social and climatic framework conditions. The jury also emphasizes the sustainability, quality assurance and fundamental transferability of the project.
