Lecture: Rwanda and the Crisis Region of Eastern Congo

The Rwanda Association Southern Wine Route and the Rwanda Working Group in Herxheim invite you to a lecture on the current situation in Rhineland-Palatinate’s partner country under the title “Rwanda and the Crisis Region of Eastern Congo.” The event will take place on Wednesday, April 9th, 2025, 7 PM, at the House of Encounter at Leonhard-Peters-Str. 3 in Herxheim. Admission is free.

The evening’s speaker is Michael Nieden, former managing director of the Partnership Association Rhineland-Palatinate/Rwanda e.V. He has known Rwanda and the region for decades through numerous stays and projects and has been on-site repeatedly in recent years. In his lecture, he takes a look at the origins and development of the conflict, but focuses primarily on the current situation and perspectives for the region.

Herxheim and the Southern Wine Route have been active in Rwanda since the beginning of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate’s partnership in the 1980s. The projects supported by the partnerships of SÜW and Herxheim, some for many years, are located in northern Rwanda and thus near the border to the conflict region. Through their partners in Rwanda, the local associations know that the conflicts in Eastern Congo have had no direct impact on the work in the partnership projects in Rwanda so far. The lecture aims to illuminate the background once again and inform about the situation of project work.
