New sports field for the Groupe Scolaire in Giti

New sports field for the Groupe Scolaire in Giti

In the municipality of Traben-Trarbach, the first joint aid campaign as part of the partnership with the Rwandan sector of Giti in the district of Gicumbi was completed with great success. Thanks to generous donations from the region, the desired goal was achieved and an urgently needed sports field project at the Groupe Scolaire in Giti was realized.

Special thanks go to the association “Herzen berühren” (Touching Hearts) and its founder and chairman Konrad Klar and his wife Marie-Luise Klar, who, as the main donors, contributed significantly to the success of the campaign. The couple has been involved in social projects with impressive passion for many years and founded the association “Herzen berühren” ten years ago to inspire like-minded people to get involved in charitable projects. Their motto, “Giving moments of happiness together,” is put into practice – and not only in this campaign. Both were present at the symbolic handover of the donation.

Originally, the plan was to build a new school kitchen for the school in Giti. However, due to implementation problems on site, this project could unfortunately not be realized. Instead, a combined basketball and volleyball court, a handball court, and the necessary retaining walls will now be built. This change to the project came at the express request of the school principal, who emphasized the great need for improved sports facilities for the approximately 1,400 students. Until now, the school has lacked suitable sports fields and the necessary equipment, limiting physical and athletic development.

“Despite the postponement of the original school kitchen project, this sports field is therefore of great importance for the school in Giti,” said Mayor Marcus Heintel. “It will not only offer students better recreational opportunities, but also strengthen the community and promote school activities. It will also enable participation in training sessions and competitions.”

Like the originally planned school kitchen, the sports field project has a similar budget (approx. €30,485) and will take two months to build. The project will benefit the students of the Groupe Scolaire and at the same time make an important contribution to improving the school’s infrastructure.

The project was organized by the local coordination office in Kigali and closely coordinated with the Rwandan government. Even though the school kitchen in Giti cannot be built for the time being, the partnership between Traben-Trarbach and Giti remains a sign of sustainable cooperation and development aid.

The project costs were covered by a successful fundraising campaign organized by the Association for Volunteering and Culture in cooperation with the Youth Parliament of the Traben-Trarbach municipality and the coffee roastery “Drei & Fünf.”

At the official handover of the donation, Mayor Marcus Heintel praised the outstanding commitment of all those involved: “This project shows how encounters, mutual respect, and joint initiatives can lead to real development prospects – for both sides of the partnership.”
