Pandemic endangers school meals – Relief fund extended
Interior Minister Roger Lewentz and the President of the Partnership Association Rhineland-Palatinate/Rwanda, Richard Auernheimer, have extended the Rhineland-Palatinate Corona Emergency Relief Fund, which was established in April 2020. The focus of the renewed donation appeal is the financing of school meals for many thousands of Rwandan children. “The Corona pandemic has not only dominated everyday life in Rhineland-Palatinate for a year. It has hit the African continent and the partner country Rwanda particularly hard economically. The consequence: Many families who can no longer afford the only warm meal for their children,” said Minister Lewentz.
In Rwanda there is a lack of financial resources both on the state side and at the private level. “Numerous people in already very precarious living conditions have lost their income opportunities due to the Corona restrictions. Hardly any of them have savings. Thus Corona becomes not only a health threat, but also an existential threat,” write Roger Lewentz and Richard Auernheimer in the donation appeal sent out today.
In recent weeks, the Rhineland-Palatinate state government and the partnership association received numerous reports that parents increasingly cannot pay for their children’s daily school meals. This means: Many children have to do without what is usually the only warm meal of the day. “For this reason, we have decided to extend the Rhineland-Palatinate Corona Emergency Relief Fund and once again draw attention to the growing need in poorer families. Therefore, we ask you again for donations to combat the greatest need for school meals in Rwanda,” Lewentz and Auernheimer write in their letter.
For requests for help from Rwanda, the state and partnership association provide coordinating support to the associations, cooperatives or network members of the partnership. Through the personal contacts, through the conscientious and prudent coordination by the office on site, it is ensured that donations are used in a targeted and transparent manner for the Rwandan partners.
