Root Foundation – Partners Wanted!

Root Foundation supports a diverse street children project in Kigali. To successfully continue the project, partners are currently being sought!
Root Foundation – Partners Wanted!
Create a safe space for growing up, playing and learning for street children
The organization Root Foundation operates in Kinyinya in the Gasabo district in Kigali. They work there in a government-provided building with street children. Gasabo is the district with the second highest number of street children in Rwanda, with the number of street children in the entire country estimated at about 7000. Most children in Kinyinya come from extremely poor and uneducated families who do not have sufficient financial means to feed their children well and send them to school. Many of them flee to the streets for this reason.
Root Foundation currently works with 120 street children and children who have little or no contact with their families and do not go to school. They try to earn their food by collecting scrap metal or simply begging.
The project work of Root Foundation is based exclusively on voluntary work and is managed by a team of six Rwandan and one Weltwärts volunteer.
The focus of their work lies on the following thematic areas:
Weekend and evening clubs: During school time, activities in the areas of art, sports, dance, storytelling and photography are offered twice a week. During school holidays, children have the opportunity to participate in activities six times a week. All workshops are led by teachers with expertise in the respective subject areas.
Parent support: Since most street children in Kinyinya are not orphans, supporting parents in their children’s development plays an essential role. Root Foundation places special emphasis on making parents understand the importance of education and networking them with each other. The networking serves mutual support as well as the creation of possible common sources of income for the families.
Peer mentoring: Each street child is assigned an older “sibling child” from the local secondary school who stands by them in all life situations and with whom the children can talk about all problems; even problems they cannot or do not want to discuss so easily with adults.
Support in accessing educational institutions: Root Foundation currently enables 47 children to attend school through support with school materials. There is constant contact with the schools to monitor the children’s progress.
